SHOW CIRCUITS AND AUCTIONS

2019 California Classic and Amber Autumn auction

The notification read, “Hello Alpaca Lovers!” After only
being in the alpaca business for one year, this caught our eye. We knew we had
to go as we loaded into our car. The four-hour drive was simple, and the
hotel/casino was grand.

As we arrived to a gracious crowd, we took our seats and
held auction signs in our hands. We were ready to bid and buy some of the most
gorgeous alpacas on earth with two, three drinks and a full belly of food.

The bidding began with an auctioneer yelling out the ongoing
bids. I saw people on phones making offers for the farmers who couldn’t make
the trip but wanted to buy. The energy in the auditorium was staggering and precisely
what I held in my mind after watching western flicks.

I’m not sure if it was the drinks or the non-stop bidding,
but I found my arm in the air and my name on a two-year-old fawn female
registration.

There were no regrets but plenty of anticipation for the show
next year. Auctions are a must-do for any alpaca rancher. If not to buy, but to
mingle with like-minded people.

Did I know what I was getting myself into when I registered seven females for the 2019 California Classic held annually in Merced, California? No!

I didn't know that I would have to set up pens, halter, and lead my alpacas into the show ring. I didn't know that I would have to show the judge their teeth and walk them in circles so that the crowd could admire them.

I do know that I laughed a lot when the judge watched me awkwardly open my alpacas mouths, when my animals wrestled me to let them go and when I was awarded five blue ribbons.

The show circuit is a must-do for alpaca owners. It lends itself as a platform to meet fellow alpaca owners and teaches you some of the best tips for planning alpaca breeding. At the show you get to compare your animals to some of the finest in the business.
